There was a recent study in Pediatrics, by Christoph Correll, M.D., that addressed the connection between taking certain children’s antipsychotic medicines (zyprexa, seroquel, and risperdal) and becoming overweight or obese. Kids who are medicated fro bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental health conditions maybe taking these medications.
The study found that some kids gained an average of 10-19 pounds after taking these drugs for 11 weeks. The article stressed that if your child takes these meds, make sure their weight, as well as lipids, insulin, and blood- sugar levels are monitored.
My nephew takes risperdal as a medication for the symptoms of autism, and gained quite a bit of weight, that has been very difficult for him to get off.
